Things That Make You Less Attractive To Men, Women

Client survey: With over a dozen years of working with singles in various capacities (photos, coaching, assessing various outlets to meet people, and image consulting), I always ask clients about traits/habits that make people (un)attractive. While many of these can cover both men and women, some are pretty common among smaller slivers of groups.

Paid Dating Apps vs Free Dating Apps

  • Paid apps are not better than free apps, they are not worse either

  • Paying for bells and whistles will not make you more attractive

  • Building a better profile, living a better life, making friends etc will yield a better ROI than boosts, roses, superswipes etc

How To Make A Good Dating Profile: Dating Profile Photo Tips

  • Use 4–6 unique photos (outfits, locations, poses)

  • Look approachable (smile, look at the camera, dress decently, practice good hygiene/grooming)

  • Photos should be taken within the last 2–3 years AND look like you now (hair length, hair color)

  • Avoid photos w/ kids; focus on you (you can list # of kids and age so people can sense lifestyle, availability)

  • Have good posture

  • Photos should complement bios/prompts, shouldn’t overlap/repeat info again

Group Photos On Dating Apps (Hinge, Bumble)

  • Group photos can provide social validation

  • Not needed if your photos are taken so it implies you have friends (poses, locations, framing)

  • Group photos can hurt if your friends are hotter than you (women) or taller than you (guys)

  • Group photos can hurt you if your friends look immature, lack diversity or are doing dumb shit in the background

  • Avoid people that can be viewed as potential competition

Dating Profile Tips — Prompts (Ideas, Examples)

  • Avoid things that are implied

  • Avoid being negative, jaded or stating what you don’t want

  • Avoid being vague, list specifics, multiple talking points per prompt

  • Avoid answers that are one-time things, things that happened to you or conflict with your intentions

  • Use 3 prompts (ignoring them suggests lack of effort or looking for a hookup)

How To Write A Dating Profile

Dating Profile Tips — Bios (Examples, Ideas)

  • Avoid repetitive information i.e. listing height in bumble bio when it’s already a dedicated field

  • Prompts and bios should cover who you are, what you seek and how you spend your time

  • No need to list company and title but recommend posting industry and function so people can get a sense of lifestyle, availability etc.

  • Don’t lie otherwise you can get banned; people will assume you are insecure or lying about other things

Online Dating Profile Tips For Men, Women

  • Make sure your social media info reflects your profile i.e. employment, location, age etc.

  • Fill out all questions that matter (read: star signs don’t matter to most people)

  • Avoid trying to sound cute, writing what you think others want to see

  • A dating profile is a reflection of yourself, offline, in-person. If you are boring in real life, your profile will be boring too

The more boring and cliche you sound/look, the harder it is to stand out.

How To Make A Good Dating Profile: Hinge

  • Use 6 unique photos (don’t repeat outfits, wardrobes)

  • You will be judged by your worst photo)

  • Caption photos with details; avoid photo prompts

How To Make A Good Dating Profile: Bumble

  • Use 4–6 unique photos

  • Avoid top photo/best photo (these apps will test all your photos and as a result, will use your worst photo first for a period of time)

  • List where you live (particularly on Bumble otherwise people will skip you as they think you are lying about location)

These items address one part of the equation — dating profiles. Even with the best profiles, you can still fail miserably with online dating if you lack discipline, don’t know how to swipe, suck at messaging, or are swiping outside your league.

Avoid things that are implied i.e. my kids/dogs are my world.
