Dating is something that is constant and changing, inevitable yet elusive, confusing, but also obvious all at the same time. There is something about it that frustrates folks, yet despite all the noise, the same themes ebb and flow, year in and year out.
Yesterday was Dating Sunday, today is Divorce Monday aka National Divorce Day. These are trends that happen each year, and while these spikes are noticeable, they don’t really mean much in the greater scheme of things, just like other aspects of dating.

AI Dating Trends In 2026
Dating is going to suck a lot more, particularly for those who rely on dating apps for all or even most of their dating outlets. As people get frustrated with rising costs, ghosting, lying, and bad behavior, they will resort to more volume approaches, less effort to be more efficient online.
Hinge has introduced more AI features as of late and its founder is launching a new dating app built around AI called Overtone. Expect more generic responses, more back and forths and more ambiguity on dating apps. AI will be used more widely to edit photos, write profiles and even send voice notes. It’s going to suck, but that doesn’t mean you have to put up with it.
Does that mean you should abandon dating apps? That depends on your mindset, outlook, effort, self-awareness and the like. I have always said one should never rely on dating apps for all or even most of their dating efforts, and that remains true in 2026. Use them sparingly, get help on your profile, strategy, and ability to screen profiles and read people.
Authenticity, vulnerability, and uniqueness will be in the highest demand in 2026.
Dating Your Self & Quitting Dating
A lot of folks are going to take a break from dating, many already did, whether due to safety, isolation during COVID or since then for various reasons, but I expect more folks to take care of themselves before seeking a partner.
Dating is brutal already, more so if you lack friends, hobbies, social skills, or a game plan. It’s nearly impossible if you are not happy on your own. No one is ever complete nor perfect, but making progress, and getting on the path for self-improvement makes dating immensely easier.
Cheap(er) Date Ideas
With more AI, more meaningless matches, rising costs and more uncertainty in the job market, expect people to be more selective with their dates and more prudent with their date ideas with shorter first dates, cheaper first dates.
Cheap(er) dates doesn’t have to mean low-effort dates. Those who are thoughtful, creative, read profiles, anticipate needs/options, and are present on first dates will fare better than others. Not everyone will embrace this, part of it involve timing, nuance, planning and communication but don’t expect a higher conversion to 2nd dates based on time spent or money spent on first dates.

Matchmakers on Dating Apps
As more matchmakers enter the market and more accountability being applied via business reviews on Yelp and Google, expect more matchmakers to pop-up on dating apps trying to recruit you for dates for their paid clients. Matchmakers need a certain number of clients or people in their database to thrive and without a vast network or constant replenishment, the easiest way matchmakers find targets is on dating apps.
Dating Events, Coffee Raves & Daytime Parties
Coffee raves or daytime events will continue to flourish as people seek out opportunities to find alcohol-free events and go out more during the day. These events can be hard to find though as many are organized last minute but those in the San Francisco Bay Area, I post them on my monthly calendars.
Similarly, people want singles events with places guaranteed to have singles in attendance but don’t want the awkwardness of traditional singles events, speed dating and the like. For some of my clients, at least the ones that do well, they have no trouble going to fun, organic events and chatting people up without the label of a singles event or dating event.
Organic activities, classes, events, pop-ups and festivals will continue to be the preferred way to meet in 2026.
What Other Trends Have You Noticed? What Do You Expect To See More Of In 2026?
Bad Advice On Tik-Tok, IG; Hot Takes
Of all the trends I hope will cease, this is up there. There are a lot of coaches, matchmakers, influencers and the like coming out with hot takes on social media. They will go viral, they will get tons of likes, comments and confirmation but that doesn’t mean that is the norm. Many accounts are bots, many are just bitter folks looking for validation or most have experiences and biases that the average person does not have (at least the average healthy person).
Good Vibes Only
This phrase is super cringy but there is something to be said of this. This is plastered all over profiles on dating apps. It seeks to have people out themselves if they don’t have good vibes to offer but that is not what I am referring to in 2026.
A lot of folks seek out people who are like them (similar interests, jobs, degrees etc.) and fail to assess things like personality, mindset and vibes. It’s hard to assess through a dating app but not impossible.
Being too similar is not a great indicator for success nor is having the same vibe either, but sometimes folks need to just spend time with each other, experience some difficult situations, let their guard down or allow the ability to laugh at themselves in order to see if there is a spark or at least a window to look into each others’ lives more than what a profile shows or what a first date reveals typically.
Most people have more deal-breakers on apps than in real life to provide a way to more easily filter folks, likes, and matches at the risk of dismissing people too prematurely. Understanding the differences between preferences and deal-breakers will be a strong key to success for dating in 2026.
TL;DR Dating Trends In 2026 For Men, Women
Take care of yourself, do what you enjoy doing, be present, make time, make an effort, cut off time-wasters sooner, stop making excuses for others and get help from trusted sources as opposed to people who never struggled with dating, have advantages you don’t, have differing intentions and goals that you do or are biased because your relationship with them i.e. friendship, family or payments.
2026 doesn’t have to be a repeat of the past, but only if you make changes. Don’t ignore things like mindset, personality, effort and persistence.
